The main differences and similarities between art and press photography

The main difference between art photography and press photography is that press photography is rare. It’s a moment captured in time. Press photography is not altered to look like something it is not. It’s a photograph reflecting a true moment in time.

Unlike press photography, art photography is used to capture the photographer’s feelings. They can alter the photographs to convey a certain emotion or message to the viewers.

Similarly, art and press photography each tell a story. Press photography photographs explain the story where as art photography tells the story.

Is it ethical and acceptable to alter art photographs? Why? Why not?

Some people may believe that altering photographs lessens the meaning of a picture. Art photography on the other hand I believe is made to be altered. Photographers alter the photograph to portray the certain emotion of the picture.

Is it ethical and acceptable to alter press photographs? Why? Why not?

Some photographers (i.e photo journalists) have specific guidelines and limitations to how and what they can alter the photographs. I believe that altering press photographs takes away from the picture telling the true, real, rare story.
